A quiet time on Luke 24

jobsearchnewspaperHave you ever forgotten something?
Have you ever forgot what someone said to you?
Have you ever possibly ignored something because you thought it was not that important?

Imagine sharing with people that you’re going to move. You move and you’re missing and your friends can’t remember that you moved.

This is what happened to Jesus.

based on verse luke 24:8 “Then they remembered his words.”

Two men who had clothes with the appearance of lightning were the ones that did the reminding.
The women who had followed Jesus from Galilee were the ones being reminded at first.

Here, the women were reminded of something that Jesus said.
-Jesus earlier in Galilee said that he must be delivered in to the hands of sinful men, be crucified and die on the 3rd day.

The women were asked, as if it were obvious, why they looked for the living among the dead.
-In their sorrow, devotion or whatever that distracted them from what happened to Jesus, they did not remember.

After being reminded, they went to tell what had happened to the eleven apostles and the others. For some reason, their words didn’t make sense to whoever listened. Either they were hysterical, dumbfounded, or not very good at explaining what had happened. Maybe they didn’t share what the two men tried to remind them of. Maybe they were stuck on the two men having clothes that looked like lightning. (v.4)
-even though they had the advantage of knowing ahead of time and then being reminded, they still couldn’t share what they knew.

To make matters worse, Peter, Jesus’ best friend, after hearing the women got up and ran to the tomb only to find just strips of linen and no Jesus. (v. 12) It was said after that he wondered what happened.
-Even he forgot what Jesus said.
-I’m not saying that he was a bad friend for not remembering one of the things that Jesus kept on saying as we all have forgotten sometimes but he was with Jesus with every day! On top of that, the women came back and told them what happened. Maybe the women were speaking too fast or something but still… he forgot.

How many times have you forgotten what Jesus said to you?
-Maybe we’ve read the Bible so many times that we forget what is relevant but isn’t it scary that something so obvious was forgotten?

What about you? What kind of stuff have you forgotten?

So to make it even worse than before, just like when we discuss our every day life, I think Jesus can be surprised how we still talk about it with little idea of what God just did. For example, two of the group that found out about Jesus not being in the tomb was walking along when Jesus walked beside them. (v. 15) They didn’t recognize because they weren’t allowed to (v. 16) and Jesus asked them what they were discussing. The two shared and asked how could what happened to Jesus be unknown to him (keep in mind that they didn’t know it was Jesus)? But what they shared lacked one thing, the fact that the important thing isn’t that Jesus was missing and everyone from the group had no idea what happened but rather the fulfillment of the scriptures. (v. 25-26)
-They were so stuck on what happened that they didn’t remember the scriptures/things Jesus said.

Then they had dinner later on that night and after breaking of bread and eating, they recognized that he was Jesus but then he disappeared from their sight (It didn’t mention if he vanished or if he just walked away). (v. 30)

Key things:
1. When Jesus was speaking/reading/reciting scriptures to them, they remembered that their hearts burned (v.32)
2. They were able to see Jesus after Jesus broke the bread. (v.30-31)
